Back to school – with a cup

Back to school – with a cup

LUNACUP can make your days more comfortable – be it in an office or at school.

There are no limits to this comfortable feeling.

With the coming of the school year many girls and young women are dealing with using the cup at school.

Will I manage the exchange?
Is it suitable for me?
Wouldn’t I need two cups?
Isn’t it better to use the tampon after all?

Dear customers, using the cup at school isn’t a problem at all. I have years of my own experience to back my claim up. Nowadays, most school bathroom stalls are fitted with washbasin, which makes using the cup easier than before. If the stall with the basin isn’t your case, you can always take a bottle of water with you.

Always remember to wash your hand or use sanitizing gel, before you manipulate with the cup. After removing the cup, rinse it with the water from the bottle and reinsert it. If needed, wash your fingertips as well so you can leave the stall without the slightest doubt. Everything is easy and discreet!

There is always the possibility of keeping two cups and wash them later at home, but I personally think that one is enough to get you through all your, tests, exams, and PE classes.

There are so many advantages when you compare the cup to the tampon. The greatest one is, of course, the fact that it doesn’t affect a woman’s body, neither the environment and the money saved is the sweetest cherry on the top. I know it may seem like quite an investment, but the cup pays for itself after 8 or 10 periods and you don’t have to spend any money on hygiene products 8 or 10 years.

So what are you waiting for? Have a great school year!

On the road with the cup

It is really great to travel with the cup

The summer’s almost gone, but that doesn’t stop you from going on the trip at all! The autumn treks are coming as well as journeys to the exotic parts of the world and the upcoming winter season. So don’t forget your traveling buddy at home!

There are so many reasons to travel with the cup. There is no need to carry boxes of hygiene products which frankly never stay inside their boxes and you always find yourself treasure hunting for the pads or tampons all over your suitcase or backpack. You don’t have to take care of the size of pads you will need and you will definitely not have to think about whether your period is coming during your travel, because you are able to do simply anything with the cup. Bungee jumping or swimming with dolphins? No problem!

Our customers often ask how to take care of the cup on the road. Or whether it is even possible to take certain activities, such as hiking or beach holiday full of sun, sand and drinks, at all. The answer, of course, is yes. You can do all these activities and much more without worrying about a string sticking out of your swimsuit or thinking of the way how to dispose of used pad or tampon on the mountain trail or figuring out how many pieces you need to take with you. You just need one cup. You can swim in the waves, you can take the shower under the waterfall or do any of the winter or summer sports while feeling really comfortable.

And now, let me share some tips on how to use the cup in more demanding conditions without the toilet or the sink.

To be completely honest, I prefer changing the cup in the wood rather than in public restrooms. So the bottle of water is a must-have. I recommend washing the cup with drinking water. If it isn’t possible to wash the cup with warm water at least once a day I always wash the cup with an antibacterial wash and then rinse it thoroughly. Otherwise I wash the cup with femine intimate wash once a day. I used to take two kinds of wash with me – one with the shower gel and one with femine intimate wash. I reconsidered that after a while and I only take the femine intimate wash. Mountain hikers already know why – every bit counts when you are carrying everything on your back!

You can also swim as much as you can without changing the cup after each and every swim. Even winter sports enthusiasts will appreciate the cup because the changing interval is 2 or 3 times longer than with a pad or a tampon. So instead of freeing yourself from the grip of your clothes you can spend the time enjoying the breathtaking views with an Aperol spritz.

You will enjoy yourself so much, you might even forget to change the cup after the 12 hours, so please make a note on that and if you are a new user, it is a good idea to practice the insertion and removal of the cup before you go on your holiday.

What is LUNACUP menstrual cup?

Let us introduce our cup in a nutshell

The LUNACUP menstrual cup is a modern and eco-friendly care equipment for a modern, vibrant woman who lives her life to the fullest. The cup is a solution for every woman who puts her health and comfort during the period in the first place.

What it is made of? Do I feel it inside when it is inserted?

The menstrual cup is made of medical-grade silicone and like tampon it is inserted into the vagina. It is very soft and flexible and able to adapt to the vagina of every woman. And that is why you won’t feel it inside.

How does it work and how often do I need to empty it?

The cup collects the blood inside the vagina (unlike tampon which absorbs it) and after 4 to 12 hours it has to be removed (depends on the flow intensity) and it is emptied into the toilet. It is reinserted after rinsing with water. Contrary to the opinion of women who have never tried the cup before, the emptying is quick and clean. The menstrual cup is able to collect 2-3 times more menstrual blood than tampon is able to absorb.

How many cups do I need?

You will use one single cup throughout your whole monthly cycle. After your period is over you will easily sterilize the cup and store it safely in the cotton pouch. The cup is then ready for the next period.

The lifespan of the LUNACUP menstrual cup

You can use a single cup for more than 5 years and its lifespan is more than 10 years.

How come the cup can be used repeatedly for so long?

Because the cup is made of a material which antibacterial by its nature and can be easily and regularly sterilized at home or while on the road. That is why the LUNACUP menstrual cup is always 100% clean.

100 % eco-friendly product

Because you can use it repeatedly you will save a significant sum of money and help the environment at the same time. The menstrual cup LUNACUP is as green as a green product can be.

What activities can I do with the inserted cup?

You can do whatever activity you like (jogging, cycling, yoga, swimming, sauna, etc.). You can do any water-related activity without a limitation.

No more shopping for tampons and pads.

You don’t have to keep an eye stock anymore!

No more bin hunting!

With the menstrual cup, you will never experience often awkward searching for the bin to dispose of the tampon or pad.

  •  You can’t feel the inserted cup and because it is fully inside your body, you feel comfortable and safe.
  • It has your back whole night (up to 12 hours). It needs to be emptied in the morning and evening only with the light flow.
  • The cup is impervious to leaks because it is firmly pressed against the vaginal wall.

Health risks of using pads or tampons

1. They contain toxic substances

In the process of whitening, the material (chlorination) the toxic dioxin builds up. It is not unusual to add more chemical substances to increase the absorption rate of pads or tampons.

2. Not sterile

No manufacturer guarantees the sterility of their products, be it pads or tampons. You will never find such a claim on the cover, simply because the sterility is unachievable.

3. An ideal environment for bacteria to multiply

The cellulose used for tampons is an ideal material for bacteria to multiply in as well as the steamy environment of pads that is impossible to ventilate. Bacteria multiply really fast. There is a risk of toxic shock syndrome (TSS).

4. They affect the natural balance of your body

Tampons dry out the membranes and change the pH; pads create a steamy environment. Tampons release small fabric fibers into the vagina.

The LUNACUP menstrual cup

  •  Doesn’t contain harmful substances (made entirely of medical grade silicone)
  •  Sterile
  •  The risk of the TSS is really small; the cup is antibacterial
  •  Doesn’t affect the inner environment of the vagina; doesn’t affect the pH
  •  Doesn’t stop the period as it is sometimes with tampons

What are LUNACUP menstrual cups made of?

The LUNACUP menstrual cup is made of medical-grade silicone KEG-2003H, the platinum quality.

The used medical silicone KEG-2003H made by renowned Japanese company ShinEtsu complies with the American USP Class VI. certification as well as European certification ISO 10993. Material is also certified as material for short term medical implants.

The medical-grade silicone has the following advantages:

  •  It doesn’t cause allergic reactions – hypoallergenic
  •  It doesn’t allow bacteria to multiply (contrary to pads/tampons) – antibacterial
  •  Soft, flexible and durable
  •  It doesn’t affect the environment of the vagina nor affects the pH
  •  Medical grade silicone is used in medicine for more than 50 years. It is used for example as a base for contact lenses or cardiac valve replacement

I bet it is hard to imagine using a piece of cellulose as an implant or contact lenses.

Yet you insert the same piece of cellulose into your most intimate body part.

The LUNACUP menstrual cup, on the other hand, is made of medical-grade silicone – a material designed to be inserted into the human body, including long-term implants. Therefore it is perfectly safe to insert it into your body.

LUNACUP menstrual cup user guide

Please read the cup’ s user quide thoroughly and refer to it in the future if necessary.

A little practice may be needed to learn how to insert or remove the cup.
More you use the cup, more skilled and aware of your own body you are.
This guide is based on interviews with hundreds of women.

It will show you what to do step by step.

1. Preparing the cup before the first use

Take the following steps before you use your cup for the first time.
1. Wash the cup thoroughly with warm water and feminine soap.
2. Sterilize the cup
• in a microwave – in included sanitation pouch. Observe the instructions on the back of the pouch.
• in a saucepan – put the cup in the boiling water. Make sure the whole cup is immersed in the water and boil it for 5 minutes.

Practicing the handling of the cup

The best time to practice is in days of low flow, usually the last two days or the first day of your period. When practicing, use the pad as well in case that you didn’t insert the cup properly and it would leak. You should practice in time you wouldn’t be disturbed.

2. Inserting the cup

1. Wash your hands with soap.
2. Rinse the cup with water The cup is slippery and easier to insert when wet.
3. Get into position The most common position is when sitting on the toilet. You can also squat. Be aware that vaginal muscles are slightly contracted when squatting.
4. Fold the cup. Try out both ways of folding and choose the one that is more suitable when inserting and fully unfolding the cup.
5. Insert the cup
• hold the folded cup firmly between your thumb and index finger and hold it folded.
• insert the cup in the direction of the vagina.
• the whole cup must be inserted inside, including the stem.

3. The correct position of the cup

• Insert a cup as close to vaginal orifice as possible, as it makes any further manipulation easier.
• The whole stem is inside the vagina at a minimum of 0.5 cm from the vaginal orifice.
• If the cup can’t be inserted further and the stem is not fully inside it needs to be shortened. Adjusting the cup to the right position
• If any part of the cup (usually the stem) isn’t fully inside push the cup further inside.
• Use your pelvic floor muscles to move the cup further into vagina Feel free to use your finger.
• Take the cup out and insert it deeper

Adjusting the cup to the right position

• If any part of the cup (usually the stem) isn’t fully inside push the cup further inside.
• Use your pelvic floor muscles to move the cup further into vagina. Feel free to use your finger.
• Take the cup out and insert it deeper

4. Checking the cup’s position

It is necessary to make sure the cup is in the right position and fully unfolded. If the cup doesn’t fully unfold it will leak the blood. To prevent leaks follow these steps.

Ways to check the cup

A. after inserting and unfolding cup you will hear a typical sound connected to unfolding. In most cases, the sound indicates that the cup is fully unfolded. If you don’t hear the sound proceed to the next step.
B. Gently pull the stem down. The correctly inserted cup resists your effort and it usually can’t be moved easily.
C. A close check: use your index finger to reach the unfolded part of the cup and the rim and check whether the cup is fully unfolded. If it isn’t, gently push the vaginal wall away from the cup and wait until it unfolds completely.

How to deal with an incorrectly unfolded cup

1. Try out different folding procedure. This may make the cup to unfold without any further manipulation.
2. Strongly squeeze the lower part of the cup above the stem.
3. Check the position of the cervix and its positioning in the cup.
4. Gently push away the vaginal wall away in the place of the dent until the cup unfolds completely.

LUNACUP menstrual cup quide control a cup inside

5. When to empty the cup

• usually after 4-6 hours during the heavy flow and after 10-12 hours during the light flow.
• the cup can hold up to 15 ml (smaller size) or 20 ml (larger size) of the menstrual blood before it needs to be emptied.
• we recommend emptying the cup not later than after 12 hours even during the low flow days.
• use the pad and let the cup overflow. This will give you an idea on how long it takes for the cup to be full.
• Always empty the cup before sports or any kind of more demanding activity.

6. Removing the cup

1. Wash your hand with a soap
2. Get into position The most common position is when sitting on the toilet. You can also squat. Squeeze your vaginal muscles (similarly to childbirth) and the cup is pushed out on its own.
3. Break the suction The cup holds firm onto the vaginal walls and it may be uncomfortable to pull it down with force. Therefore break the suction holding firmly against vaginal walls first.

LUNACUP menstrual cup quide control a cup inside

There are two ways to do this:
A. press the lower part of the cup.
B. Place your finger on the side of the cup roughly in the middle and press the cup inwards. If the cup still holds firmly, move your finger up to the rim and press the cup there.

4. Remove the cup When the lower part of the cup is out, lean the cup until the half of the rim comes out. Then pull out the rest of the cup. You can put out the cup easily this way without spilling any of its content.
If the cup resists your effort, try to wiggle it instead of pulling it straight down.
5. Empty the content into the toilet.
6. Rinse the cup with water.
7. Reinsert the cup.

7. When the period is over

Rinse the cup thoroughly with the cold and then with the warm water. Use the feminine wash as well. Use the gentle brush to clean any uneven surfaces. Turn the cup inside out to clean the inside of the cup as well. Sterilize the cup before and after the period. Discoloration of the silicone:
With the clear color option of the cup the material color turns slightly yellow. This is a natural property of the material without any influence on functionality and your health.

8. Storing the cup

Let the cup dry out and store it in the included pouch when your period is over. Do not store the cup in a plastic bag or an air-tight container.

9. Health information

• the menstrual cup does not prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.
• If you observe symptoms such as pain, Itching, irritation, genital inflammation, or experience problems in passing urine, remove the cup, and seek medical attention.
• you don’t have to remove the cup when passing urine.
• remove the cup before the intercourse including penetration into the vagina.

First day using the cup

How to make it through the first few days and don’t give it up?

Every beginning might be a tough one. That is why I’d like to give you a few tips on how to make the first few days as smooth as possible!

There are women who are experts in handling the cup since day one, but there are also women who need 2 or 3 periods for the cup to grow on them.

Every woman is an individual and there is no need to worry if you can’t insert it for the first time and the cup leaks. It is important not to lose your temper, try again, or find out why the cup leaks.

We are very much aware of this and that is why we offer free guidance on our Facebook profile in the Advice section. You can also find useful tips in our guide.

Folding the cup

There are two most proven techniques:

Folding the cup C
C technique

Push down technique

Firstly rinse the cup with water to make the insertion easier. The next step is to relax. It may be a problem at first because you will focus on the process and tighten your muscles as a result.

The insertion itself may be done in squat, sitting on the toilet, with one leg up, and so on. Try it out and find the most suitable way for you.

I personally prefer to insert the cup while squatting in a warm shower as the water relaxes my muscles naturally and helps with menstrual cramps.

The positioning of the cup

Do not push the cup as far as the tampon.

Release the grip and let the cup unfold. After the insertion it is important to check the rim and make sure it is not bent anywhere. If it is bent, push the vaginal wall away from the cup with your finger and let the cup fully unfold to create the suction.

You will prevent leaks. Test the unfolding by gently pulling down the stem. If the cup fully unfolded itself and if you use the right size, you will note the resistance of the cup. The stem should be fully inside your body. If the stem isn’t fully inside and you can’t push the cup deeper, feel free to shorten or clip the stem.

How to clean the cup

Sterilization – boil in water / in the sanitation pouch

The cup should be sterilized before the first use and after each and every period. If you are one of more sensitive women, prone to infections, it is a good idea to sterilize the cup even during your period and empty it more often.

You can sterilize the cup in two easy ways:

1. Boil it in water in the saucepan.
2. Microwave it in the sanitation pouch, which is included in the delivery.

Emptying the cup during your period

When emptying the cup during your period, rinse the cup with the warm water and femine intimate wash (at least twice a day – in the morning and the evening).

Cleaning with toothbrush

After using the cup for a while, it may change the color a bit, even if you wash it regularly. Don’t worry about it as blood is a strong colorant.

You can remove this coloring with a toothbrush (reserved for cleaning the cup) and q-tips can be used to clean the holes.

The cup shouldn’t be cleaned with a sharp object. Such objects can damage the surface which may have a negative impact on functionality.

Cleaning with hydrogen peroxide 3%

You can also clean the cup using 3% hydrogen peroxide. The 3% hydrogen peroxide is available in every pharmacy or chemist’s and is very affordable. One 100 ml bottle will do for two thorough cleanings of the cup. A cup previously cleaned with water and femine intimate wash has to stay submerged in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 7 to 8 hours (you can leave the cup in the solution overnight and be pleasantly surprised in the morning).

It is recommended to sterilize the cup after cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide.

Use the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution only.

We recommend peroxide cleaning once in 3 months.

How to use the cup – a quick guide

Inserting the cup

1. Before inserting the cup

Rinse the cup with water (makes the insertion easier) and fold it. You will reduce its size and so it is easier to insert the cup.

2. Inserting the cup

The folded cup is placed at the edge of the vagina. When inserted, the cup unfolds itself. Its upper rim presses itself against the vaginal wall and collects the menstrual blood. It is placed inside your vagina in its entirety including the stem (a small handle) which ensures the easy removal of the cup.

Removing the cup

1. How often to empty the cup

The emptying interval depends on the blood flow and it is usually from 4 to 12 hours. The cup is suitable for use during the day and night as well. It is usual to empty the cup after 8 or 10 hours. In general, the changing interval of the cup is 2 or 3 times longer than with tampon.

How to choose a menstrual cup

What should you be aware of when selecting the cup? What cup is suitable for you?

The menstrual cup is a single component product made entirely of silicone. All the cups may seem the same to you, but there really are differences.

These differences may determine whether the cup is suitable for you or not and the comfort of the use.

1. The material – the difference in flexibility, smoothness, etc.

The cup should be made of medical-grade silicone which is free of health risks and allergic reactions. If you want your cup to be always pleasant to use, to adapt to your body and to the shape of your vagina, to hold a steady suction and not to press against your vaginal walls, you have to consider the material of the cup carefully.
The material should feel smooth and pleasant the first time you touch it. The higher the quality of the medical-grade silicone used, the more pleasant and flexible the cup is. The quality of material influences the lifespan of the cup and it also determines how easy it is to wash and take care of the cup. The smoother cups are less porous so it is more difficult for solid particles to hold on.

Most of the manufacturers are using the silicone of lesser quality to cut the expenses.

Therefore we recommend the LUNACUP menstrual cup made of medical-grade silicone of platinum (*****) quality.

2. The surface – smooth and soft for easy cleaning

The surface of the menstrual cup should be free of any grooves, uneven surfaces, or folds. They make the cleaning process more demanding.

3. The stem design – easy to grip

The flat stem is an accessory to the cup designed to make the removal of the cup easier. The stem is usually the reason why woman experiences uncomfortable pressure or any kind of irritation. It is very important to choose the right design.

The ideal flat stem design should:

  • be as small as possible, so it wouldn’t get in the way
  • but be large enough to make the manipulation with the cup really easier
  • be grooved to prevent slipping from the grip
  • be soft
  • be free of sharp edges
  • be of the appropriate length so you don’t have to clip it. Clipping produces sharp edges which may be irritating.

Tip: Do not use the cup with a too narrow and/or hollow stem. If any solid particles end up in the stem, it is very difficult to wash them out. Such a stem is also very difficult to hold on to. It is always better to choose the cup with the flat stem design.

LUNACUP menstrual cup is fitted with a very soft and flexible stem with rounded edges. The stem is of appropriate size,q so there is no need to clip it. It is diamond-shaped. The shape is the reason why it still easy to grip despite the smaller it’s size. On top of that the stem is fitted with small bumps (grips) as prevention of slipping.

4. The shape – most women prefer the conic cup

The menstrual cup usually comes in two shapes – the conic and bell shape. Generally speaking, the conic shape is more universal and more suitable for most women.

The LUNACUP menstrual cup is conic shaped.

The bell-shaped cups are recommended for women who have, for example, looser pelvic floor muscles and so the wider cups are suitable.

5. Upper body and rim of the cup

The upper body of the cup must always be widened. The rim of the cup is pressed against vaginal walls. This prevents the cup from leaking. It doesn’t mean that wider the cup, the better the seal. The wide rim may on the contrary be the source of difficulties when manipulating and unpleasant feelings when removing or inserting the cup. The widening of the upper body of the cup should, therefore, be gentle and the collar of the cup should be more pronounced.

We designed LUNACUP menstrual cup to be free of leaks and rim of the cup to be comfortable and enable the cup to be easy to manipulate.

6. Holes, lines, grips

Bulges: There should be bulges (grips) present in the lower area of the cup (above the stem). They prevent the cup from slipping while you are removing it. Holes: Small holes in the cup help you to release the suction. Every menstrual cup has them. When placed as high as possible they don’t impact the capacity of the cup. The holes should be large enough to ensure comfortable cleaning. Lines: A good cup should be fitted with measuring lines that help you to keep track of your period’s intensity. Thanks to the lines, you will always be in the loop!

The LUNACUP menstrual cup has got all three features – grips, high enough placed holes, and measuring lines. The cup is always reliable and easy to manipulate.

7. Coloration

The colored versions of our cups are health risk-free which has been proven by tests in certified laboratories.

8. Health risks

Always check whether the manufacturer took and passed the examination of a certified lab. The LUNACUP menstrual cup passed all the tests with flying colors! It is 100 % health risk-free. These tests were performed by certified international laboratories as well as in laboratories of local health authorities.
